I wanted to create an intriguing character that stayed away from the somewhat benign stereotypes we associate with ladybird characters.

A quickie this time, focusing on mark making and colour. Over the last couple of years as my understanding of colour has improved my palette choices have become more subtle…so I thought it was time to throw caution to the wind! Rawr!

The painting is based around a character from the story that I’m gradually writing called Exula.

The Butterfly Assassin

The third in the Insect Dynasty Series, The Butterfly Assassin is actually based on the Giant Atlas moth. This moth is so lavishly decorated however that I thought The title Butterfly Assassin might cause less confusion. The frilly tendrils are actually only found on the males, but I wasn't about to let a design feature like that go to waste!

This was created in Photoshop CS3, taking somewhere around 20 hours, simply because there were so many different material types to render. A first for me and certainly a lot of fun to do.

The Mantis Queen was an experimental piece and the first in a growing series. I wanted to see how far I could take the incorporation of abstract shapes and patterns and fuse them into my rendering style. Completed in about 20 hours in Photoshop CS3.

This is the Fourth in the Insect Dynasty Series. I wanted to push my palette choices a little further with this one, work with colours I wouldn't usually consider using. Consequently it took a little longer to bring the piece to completion, coming in around 30 hours.

It was challenging to see this one through as numerous other pieces started to spring to mind that i'd like to tackle as a result of this piece. As i'm sure many of you reading this can relate to, there just isn't enough hours in the day to do it all. If i didn't like sleeping so much I'd give it up completely just so that I could paint and sculpt more Thanks for looking!

Sedna

Based loosely around the goddess Sedna who was said to have birthed all the arctic marine sea mammals. This was an impromptu painting for me; I was looking through my image archive when I saw a face staring back at me from one of the image thumbnails. The photo was actually that of a tiger diving into water. I decided to keep the tiger like face for Sedna to represent the more ferocious qualities of her character. This also gave me the opportunity to further play around with pattern work.

Photoshop CS3 10hrs or thereabouts.
